Americans love animals. Forty-six million families in the United States own at least one dog, and thirty-eight million keep cats.
Americans also love to eat animals. This year, they will cook roughly twenty-seven billion pounds of beef, sliced from some thirty-five million cows. Most of these creatures have been raised under conditions that are, as Americans know—or, at least, by this point have no excuse not to know—barbaric.
Sarah Silverman recently told Marie Claire Magazine:
“When I was 9 or 10 years old, my dad took me over to a neighboring farm to help get stuff for the meal. The farmer, Vic, told me to look at all the turkeys and pick one out. I saw a cute one with a silly walk and cried, ‘Him!’ Before my pointing finger had even dropped to my side, Vic had grabbed the turkey by the neck and slit [the animal's] throat. Blood and feathers went flying. I had sentenced that turkey to death! Up until then, I didn’t know where meat came from—and I’ve been a vegetarian ever since.”
Everyone has heard of 90’s supermodel, Cindy Crawford, right? Well did you know that said supermodel is a fan of the vegan book Skinny Bitch? She was recently asked what book has had the most impact on her recently and she said:
“Skinny Bitch, by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin. It’s a great incentive to eat well, and I get extra energy from healthy choices like vegetables and chicken - all food we can eat together. “
Ummmm, Cindy did you really read the book? Just wondering where the chicken part comes into play, hmmmm.

It sounds like Jenn is already a healthy eater who enjoys vegetarian meals, so I wonder what’s keeping her from making the switch to a vegetarian diet?
Alexandra Paul ,46, has been a vegetarian for over 30 years. She was recently interviewed by Vegetarian Times magazine where she had this to say.
What motivated you to become a vegetarian?
It’s the best way each of us can save animals and save the environment. Now, over 30 years later, I also see a spiritual aspect to it: a reverence for all life and a consciousness that comes from making a decision not to eat just anything.
How were you introduced to vegetarianism?
I read Diet for a Small Planet when I was 14, just when I was formulating my ethics and “inhaling” new information. I wanted to be a good person and make a difference in the world. Vegetarianism seemed to fit both bills.
